Russia’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Yuri Borisov, recently visited Mil Moscow Helicopter Plant, where a prototype of a modernized Mi-28N combat helicopter is starting its flight tests. Mil is a subsidiary of Russian Helicopters, part of State Corporation Rostec. Borisov had already witnessed the helicopter’s first hovering flight on 9th September.
Russian Helicopters CEO Alexander Mikheev says the main advantages of the upgraded machine are its agility and ability to operate around the clock, and its increased firepower.
The modernized design integrates experience from theMi-28UB training and combat variant, and the front cabin is equipped with a second set of controls. According to Russian Helicopters, the crew will now receive more information about the environment and all helicopter systems in a more accessible format, which will increase crew situational awareness, facilitate interaction and increase the speed of decision-making in complex combat situations. The helicopter is also equipped with an enhanced guidance, navigation and flight control system.
The upgraded version features an advanced radar mounted above the rotor hub offering enhanced capabilities in the use of precision weapons, including self-guided missiles.
Cabin armour offers protection against armour-piercing bullets and projectiles with a caliber up to 20mm. New materials and design solutions have been used to increase resistance to combat damage.
According to the manufacturer, the composite main rotor blades can complete a flight after being hit by a 20-30mm caliber shell. The fuel system is designed to exclude the possibility of an explosion or a fuel tank fire.
