Another milestone for the Solar Impulse team: the solar-powered Solar Impulse 2, flown by Bertrand Piccard, landed in Seville this morning (23rd June) after successfully crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The 71 hour 8 minute flight — Piccard’s longest so far — started at 6:30 AM on 20th June, when the aircraft took off from New York’s JFK airport. Guided by the Mission Control Centre in Monaco, the team managed to take advantage of a narrow window bypassing a cold front in the middle of the Atlantic.
It was the aircraft’s 15th flight since leaving Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates on 9th March 2015. Having crossed both the Pacific and the Atlantic, the round-the-world journey is now 90% complete. After a few days in Seville, the next stopover will be in Egypt or Greece. The final destination, Abu Dhabi, is now just three flights away.
