Natilus is a California-based start-up developing three autonomous mixed-wing cargo aircraft (BWB) projects. Together with ZeroAvia, the two companies have announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop hydrogen electric engines for the Natilus Kona cargo plane. ZeroAvia's ZA600 will be the only hydrogen-electric propulsion source offered for the new Kona short-haul refueling drone, with the partnership focused on zero-emission, low-cost operations.
...To develop a hydrogen-electric propulsion system...
The Natilus Kona, with its design in the form of a Blended Wing Body, offers increased volume for hydrogen storage, which could transform the air cargo delivery sector into a low-cost, low-carbon one, while increasing flight range. The partnership with ZeroAvia will leverage the company's expertise in hydrogen-electric powertrain technology and Natilus' unique design to create a scalable, long-range, emissions-free air cargo delivery solution for the entire industry
....Based around the ZA600
Natilus recently validated the performance of the BWB design through flight testing of a one-quarter scale Kona prototype, following three years of extensive wind tunnel testing, while ZeroAvia completed eight test flights of its 600 kW engine ZA600 prototype in a 19-seat test bed aircraft.
