Euronaval 2016 : ECA’s IT180 drone goes to sea

French robotics specialist ECA is promoting a navalised variant of its IT180 drone at Euronaval 2016. The IT180, featuring two counter-rotating rotors, is already in service with the French Army with the designation Drogen. It has a maximum weight of 25kg and can carry a 5kg payload. The IT180 is claimed to be extremely stable, allowing operation at wind speeds up to 60km/h.

ECA is highlighting several naval applications for the drone, including a « virtual mast ». Connected to the ship via a fibre optic cable, the IT180 can be deployed to a height of 150m. Depending on the payload, it can be used for surveillance (including mine detection) or as a communications relay.

ECA also offers its Sterna solution, where the IT180 is used to evaluate a ship’s magnetic signature. The drone, fitted with a magnetometer, can perform this mission in around 45 minutes. The Sterna solution won the Innovation Trophy at this year’s show.
