Boeing announces $8bn GECAS order for 737 MAX 8s

Boeing and GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), the commercial aircraft leasing and financing arm of General Electric, have announced an order for 75 737 MAX 8s.

The order, booked in December and announced on 4th January, is valued at $8.25bn at current list prices. It increases the GECAS firm order book for the 737 MAX to 170 aircraft, the largest of any aircraft leasing company. This is hardly surprising, considering that the Leap 1-B engine that powers the 737 MAX is produced by GE/Safran joint venture CFM International.

Also on 4th January, Travel Service – the Czech airline company that operates scheduled flights under the SmartWings brand – finalized an order for five 737 8 MAXs, valued at $550m at current list prices. Travel Service previously placed an order for three 737 MAXs at the Paris Air Show in 2013 and currently operates a mixed fleet that includes 32 737s.

To date, the 737 MAX has accumulated 3,419 orders, making it the fastest-selling aircraft in Boeing history.
